When Albertans turn 65, they are eligible for Seniors Blue Cross – but do you know what this actually covers?
Understanding your Seniors Blue Cross coverage is crucial to making the most of the benefits available to you. The Alberta Coverage for Seniors Program offers premium-free coverage for prescription drugs and other health-related services not included under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). However, it is important to note that this is NOT an automatic program. Upon turning 65, you should receive an application package in the mail. If you didn’t receive this package, contact AHCIP directly to ensure your enrollment.
What IS covered under Seniors Blue Cross:
Prescription drugs listed in the Alberta Drug Benefit List
This ensures that seniors have access to necessary medications without the burden of high costs.
Diabetes supplies
For those managing diabetes, the program covers essential supplies, helping to maintain health and manage the condition effectively.
Ambulance services
In a medical emergency, the program covers your ambulance services
Clinical psychological services
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Seniors Blue Cross includes coverage for clinical psychological services, and supporting mental well-being.
Home nursing care
For seniors requiring medical care at home, the program covers home nursing services, allowing them to receive care in the comfort of their own homes.
Chiropractic service
Coverage includes chiropractic services, which can be beneficial for maintaining mobility and managing pain.
What IS NOT covered:
Travel insurance, Drug products not listed in the Alberta Drug Benefit List, Semi-private or private hospital room, Sports medicine bracing equipment, Bandages & wound care supplies
