PSA: Your compression socks DO NOT have to be uncomfortable!
When fitted properly, compression socks can be your best friend for comfort and health during long days on your feet or extended travels. While they are available online, we strongly recommend trying them on in person. This way, you’ll truly understand what you’re getting and can tap into the free advice of our industry experts.
Here are three things our certified fitters look at for a perfect fit:
1. Length
First, consider the length. If your compression socks are bunching up behind your knee or in front of your ankle, they are likely too long. This can lead to painful red marks and discomfort. For those who are shorter in stature, standard over-the-counter socks may not fit properly. In this case, look for “petite” sizes, or better yet, ask for a fitting. Ideally, compression socks should sit about an inch below the back of your knee, with the fabric smooth and wrinkle-free.
2. Fabric
Compression socks should never dig into your ankle. If they do, the fabric may not be right for you. There are various materials with different levels of containment. If you’re dealing with more severe swelling or varicose veins, you may need a fabric that offers higher compression.
3. Size
Every brand and product line has a different measurement chart. Wearing a size not recommended by the manufacturer for your measurements will not give you the level of compression you are buying them for. If you have gained or lost a significant amount of weight, or have inconsistent swelling in your ankles, ask to be remeasured to ensure your compression is doing what it’s supposed to do.
NEVER settle for ill-fitting compression socks.
If you’re short on time, check other stores with larger selections (like us!) If you suspect that your new stockings aren’t fitting right, call the store you purchased them from, or bring them in so we can take a look.
